Following on from the release in March 2022 of Creek's remix/retrospective collection "Fake Leopard Coat" comes the thirteenth of a further 35 planned archive releases to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Edinburgh Electronic Improvisational Quartet, comprising Alan Brodie (Language Lab), Stuart Cobley (Capital Models), David Reilly (Cloudland Blue Quartet) and Craig Sutherland (Edward Spark). The records, LPs, EPs and singles, were mostly recorded live in the studio, with no overdubs, with sessions taking place between 1997 and 2019. They are being released in chronological order, with each one featuring a session from the quartet, or various configurations of its membership.

about

This is the thirteenth of over 30 planned archival releases from Crispycat Recordings by electronic improvisational quartet, Creek.

The intention is to put all of their works into the public domain by 2025.

While some of the earliest sessions were released on cassette via Reptile Records in Edinburgh in the late 90's, other than their one official LP, "Somewhere Between " (2004), which has been available on Bandcamp since 2014, any pieces that were made available, have been out of circulation for over 20 years, while, in the majority of cases, these improvisations have never been issued until now.

This release comprises the thirteenth Creek session, the third of 1998, recorded just a week after Creek XII, on a Tuesday evening in February, 1998, in the back shop at Reptile Records. This is the first of three consecutive sessions with just David Reilly and Stuart Cobley in attendance.

Creek recording sessions have, in the main, had the following modus operandi.

Rhythm bed maestro Craig Sutherland (aka Edward Spark) would arrive at each session with some pre-prepared beats. For this and the next two sessions, the beats were prepared by David Reilly.

The machines would be fired up and, for each beat, in turn, a short jam session would ensue, and ideas would be formulated by the players.

Once everyone was au fait with the general feel of the piece, they would stop.

The "record" button would then be pressed and Creek would play for as long as they wished, until the track was considered "done".

Then, they would move to the next beat.

It's as simple as that.

As you might imagine from this way of working, some tracks are more "interesting" than others.

But, as to their worth, you, the listener, are the final judge and, at last, after many years in the vaults, you will be able to hear how each session panned out.

about

Creek Edinburgh, UK

For Creek, Alan Brodie (Language Lab), Stuart Cobley (Ex-Capital Models), David Reilly (Cloudland Blue Quartet) & Craig Sutherland (Edward Spark), since 1997, there have been years of inactivity but, also, occasional action. They've only played live twice (in 2004). Now, they celebrate 25 years with a new LP, followed by a monthly reissue of every one of their improvisational sessions from outset ... more
